The How of Ow is a self-care guide for aches and pains—both acute and chronic— based on mindful-body awareness. It provides simple exercises that can be done during work or play, while sitting or driving, in bed before sleep, and after waking. The “art” of pain relief is the practice of creatively applying these skills as needed from moment to moment.

Using personal and professional narratives, it gives the reader a better understanding of:

• The nature of pain.
• The timeline of healing.
• Why pain medication is ineffective for the treatment of chronic pain.
• What to do for effective early self-care of neuro-orthopedic aches and pains from head to toes (including body mechanics, tips on walking, and help with balance).
• Basic anatomy.

Wanda Jean Swenson is a PT with over 30 years of clinical experience and a lifetime of recovering from her own injuries, who has seen the dramatically different outcomes from early versus delayed self-care. Preventative care, early self-care, and education are seen as key to improving health care outcomes.

Many people are without access to health care and even those with health insurance often have coverage that doesn’t include physical therapy or are delayed in getting to physical therapy. Written for the layperson and the health professional, the book has clear illustrations and is full of useful information. With its humorous and compassionate style, it’s a reference book, but also a good read.

The Fearless Way tells the story of Susan's journey of discovery, from the Stanford University Cancer Center to the caves of Wutai Mountain in northern China. She learns how to embrace both the best Western medicine has to offer while opening herself up to the healing joy of surrender in the practices she learns along the way.

Lovingly written over three years, the book includes several step-by-step exercises that demonstrate how the practices of mudras and mantras can optimize one's "internal terrain." Forewords to the book were written by Dwight McKee, MD, a noted cancer researcher, and Yuan Miao, founder and director of the New Century Foundation International.

Susan Sattler is a Marriage Family Therapist with a private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is also a teacher at the New Century Foundation.

The book's cover and interior were designed and illustrated by Gary Newman, a Bay Area graphic designer.

Phoenix Rising CoverOn The Wings of Phoenix Rising: A Journery from Ashes to Joy

On the Wings of Phoenix Rising gives us an awe-inspiring glimpse into the delight of existence, the joy of the cosmos. Yuan Miao also reveals how, as a very small child, she almost unknowingly and even casually accepted her spiritual life mission directly from Guan Yin. Perhaps most sobering of all is to read first-hand the heart-breaking price she had to pay, over and over, for personal access to some of life's deepest mysteries.

"Come with an empty vase and read this book for two important reasons. One is that you will never forget the story of this beautiful Chinese woman who had it all, lost it all, and found her true self in ways both surprisingly mystical and breathtakingly true. The second reason is more urgent: it is that just reading about her journey could forever change yours." —from the Introduction by Judith Simon Prager, Ph.D.

LAYERS OF REALITY CoverLayers of Reality:
32 Unique and Beautiful Works of Art for Coloring

by Gary Newman

There is often more to reality than what we see on the surface, and these hidden layers can lead to unexpected beauty. The 32 line drawings in Layers of Reality may be viewed in any of several ways. They can be regarded simply as works of art, black and white drawings, just as they are. Some of the more intricate illustrations can function as puzzles, for you to find and illuminate the underlying structure.

In this respect, you’re encouraged to look past the superficial details and wonder: Is that a picture on the wall, or a window looking through the wall? Which is the foreground, and which the background? Where does one layer end and the next begin?

And finally, they can be enjoyed simply as stress-relieving drawings to color. The drawn shapes are intended as guides; it isn’t necessary to color each one individually (unless you want to). Remember that sometimes white is the best color. Relax. Let it flow. There is no right or wrong way.

BONUS SECOND-CHANCE SECTION

At some point you may wish you could start over on a drawing, or try a different approach. Just for you, this volume includes a bonus second-chance section. All 32 drawings are reproduced again in the second half of the book, so you may try a new color scheme, if you desire.

Some of the drawings are simple and fanciful while others are more challenging. They are all unfinished works of art. You are invited to bring the artwork to completion by adding the color that will help define the layers of reality.
